USMS Releases and Morgan County
The U.S. Marshals Service handles many federal detainee custody events before and during federal proceedings. The USMS custody page explains that after an initial federal hearing, a prisoner may be released or remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal to stand trial. If convicted, the agency delivers the prisoner to an institution to serve the sentence. That chain is different from a Morgan County Jail release feed.
A person arrested federally in or near Morgan County may be held at a local contract jail, released by federal court order, or moved to another facility. If the person was booked into Morgan County Jail for any part of that process, the county jail record can show only the local custody event. It does not prove that federal custody has ended.
| Federal stage | Release source |
|---|---|
| Initial hearing release | Federal court order |
| Remand to USMS | USMS and federal court records |
| Contract jail placement | Contract site plus USMS authority |
| Sentenced federal prison | BOP locator and BOP records |
Confirm Federal Pretrial Release
Federal pretrial release is usually confirmed through the court docket and release order. USMS may be the custody owner while a person is detained, but the public release decision often appears in federal court records. If a local jail was used only as a contract custody site, the local jail may not be the final authority on federal release.
- Identify whether the case is federal or local.
- Check federal court records for release, detention, or remand orders.
- Use USMS custody information for detention status when available.
- If sentenced, search the Federal Bureau of Prisons locator.
- Use Morgan County Jail records only for the local booking or custody period.
The Morgan County released inmates local workflow should be paired with federal sources only when the same person had a local jail booking. A county release card may mean transfer to USMS, not release to the community.
Morgan County Jail Limits
The research found a historical federal detention population listing that included Morgan County Jail, Decatur, Alabama, but it should not be treated as current proof of a federal contract or release process without a current federal or county source. Current confirmation should come from federal court records, USMS information, BOP after sentence, or the Sheriff's Office for the local jail booking only.
If a Morgan County Jail record shows release to another agency, follow the receiving agency. A transfer to USMS or BOP is not a completed community release. A person can disappear from the county roster because the county booking ended while federal custody continues.
USMS Records Contact Route
USMS custody records are federal records. The public research source for this page is the U.S. Marshals custody and detention explanation. For a formal release order, use federal court records. For federal prison release dates after sentence, use BOP. For a local Morgan County booking record, use the Sheriff's public-record request process.

USMS to BOP Transfer
USMS custody often precedes BOP custody. If the person is convicted and sentenced to federal prison, BOP becomes the public locator for the federal prison stage. BOP's release-date field can show a projected or past federal release date, but that date is not a Morgan County Jail release record.
When the same person has a Morgan County court case and a federal case, keep the records separate. Use Morgan County court and jail records for local custody. Use federal court, USMS, and BOP for federal custody. Mixing them can make a transfer look like final release when custody simply changed owners.
USMS custody can be especially hard to confirm from a county roster because the person may be physically held in one place while legally held by another authority. A jail may show a local event, but federal court controls the detention or release order. If the federal docket shows release conditions, that is different from a county jail's statement that the person left the local facility. If the docket shows remand, the person may leave the county roster and remain detained under federal authority.
For Morgan County research, the useful sequence is custody owner first, location second. If the custody owner is USMS, federal court and USMS are the main sources. If the custody owner becomes BOP after sentencing, BOP becomes the release-date source. If the custody owner is Morgan County Jail, the Sheriff release feed and records request are the local route. This order prevents a local transfer from being mistaken for a final release.
Note: A USMS remand can follow a federal hearing even if the person left a local jail roster.
Morgan County Release Record Trail
Every facility or custody-system page has to be read against the same Morgan County record trail. The first question is whether the person was actually booked into Morgan County Jail. If the person was booked locally, the Sheriff release view, VINE participation, jail phone, and public-record request process are the local sources. If the person was cited, summoned, or released before a county jail booking, the jail release feed may never show the person. In that situation, the better record may be the arresting agency file, the Morgan County District or Circuit Court case, or the municipal-court path for that charge.
For a local jail booking, the online release display is short. Morgan County documents a 48-hour release view, not a permanent public archive. Older release proof usually requires a tighter request: the named person, booking date, booking number if known, release date range, charge list, bond fields, transfer notation, and booking photo if the photo is needed. The Sheriff public-record instructions require hand delivery to the Admin Captain at 119 Lee St, Decatur, AL 35601, reject phone and fax requests, and list a .00 minimum processing fee by cashier's check or money order. That fee structure should be checked before visiting because the office can estimate final production cost after it reviews the request.
The court record fills a different gap. Jail records can show that custody ended for a booking, while the court file can show bond orders, warrant recalls, disposition, sentence, probation, jail credit, dismissal, acquittal, or later modification. Morgan County Circuit Clerk records and Alacourt Access are useful when the reason for release matters. If the release involved a state sentence, ADOC records, ABPP supervision sources, and Alabama VNS become part of the trail. If the release involved federal custody, the BOP locator, USMS custody path, federal court, ICE locator, or immigration court tools may be needed. A county jail release and a state, federal, or ICE release are related only when the records connect them.
Note: A transfer can end Morgan County custody without releasing the person to the community.
Match the Release Record
A Morgan County release check should match more than a name. Names can be misspelled, shortened, or shared by more than one person. Use the booking number, booking date, release date, charge text, bond field, court case number, AIS number, federal register number, A-Number, or supervision office record when those details are available from the correct source. The Morgan County roster family can expose booking cards with name, booking number, booking date, release date, charges, bond, photo, and profile links when records are present. ADOC uses AIS as the strongest state-prison search key. BOP and ICE use their own identifiers. Court records can connect the custody event to the charge and disposition.
Keep each source in its lane. The jail record proves the local custody event. The court record explains what happened to the case. ADOC, ABPP, VNS, BOP, USMS, and ICE records answer state, supervision, federal, or immigration questions. When two sources disagree, use the originating agency for the record being questioned instead of treating a roster, locator, or notification as a final certificate.
For Morgan County cases, the federal handoff is often the point that causes confusion. A local booking can end before the federal question is finished, and a federal release can occur without creating a new Morgan County jail release. Keep the local booking date, court case, federal case number, and custody identifier together when asking an office to search. That makes the request narrow and helps separate a county release from a federal custody change.
